Nidzam Jamil Praises Discipline and Defensive Growth After Goalless Draw in Penang

Nidzam Jamil expressed satisfaction with Negeri Sembilan FC’s defensive organisation and game management after holding Imigresen FC to a 0–0 draw in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash in the Piala Malaysia 2025–26.

The encounter, played at Stadium Negeri Pulau Pinang on 17 January, saw Negeri Sembilan FC adopt a measured and disciplined approach away from home against a dangerous Imigresen FC side, prioritising structure and game control amid a demanding run of fixtures.

Speaking after the match, Nidzam stressed the importance of understanding the dynamics of two-legged cup competitions, referencing previous lessons where opportunities at home were not fully maximised. This time, the emphasis was clear: remain compact away from home and set the stage for a decisive second leg in Seremban.

“This is a cup competition. You must know how to manage the first game away and the second game at home,” said Nidzam. “We respected Imigresen FC and their attacking threats. They have players who can hurt you if you lose focus. From that perspective, a goalless draw is a fair and positive result.”

The head coach also highlighted the physical demands faced by his squad, revealing that five to six changes were made to the starting line-up due to a congested schedule of three matches in seven days. Fatigue played a key role in the tactical approach, with Negeri Sembilan opting to sit in a compact mid-block rather than applying constant high pressure.

Despite the absence of goals, Nidzam pointed to several encouraging signs. Negeri Sembilan created chances, hit the woodwork twice, and limited Imigresen FC’s opportunities, with goalkeeper Aqil producing a composed performance to secure a valuable clean sheet.

“We didn’t concede, and that’s something important,” he said. “Our defensive shape was good. This is also one of the few matches where Imigresen didn’t score, and that shows our discipline.”

Nidzam also praised the performances of squad players, singling out Amirul Adli for his contribution, as well as Mio Tsuneyasu, who was handed a starting role. He emphasised the importance of rotation and squad depth during a physically demanding period, while acknowledging that some players were carrying heavy workloads following recent league fixtures.

Addressing questions over the team’s attacking output, Nidzam remained confident that the goals will return, stressing that attacking success is a collective responsibility rather than solely on the strikers.

“Attack as a team, defend as a team. We’ve scored more than 20 goals in the league,” he explained. “Just because we didn’t score in the last few games doesn’t mean we are weak. What’s important is that defensively, we are improving.”

He concluded by reaffirming his focus on player recovery, injury assessments, and preparation for the second leg, where Negeri Sembilan FC will look to capitalise on home advantage and progress to the next round.

Goalless Draw Leaves Malaysia Cup Tie Wide Open

Negeri Sembilan FC were held to a 0–0 draw by Imigresen FC in the first-leg encounter of the Malaysia Cup at Stadium Negeri Pulau Pinang earlier today.

Nicknamed The Jangs, Negeri Sembilan entered the match as favourites and asserted control from the opening whistle. The visitors dominated possession and created a series of attacking moves through Takumi Sasaki, Khuzaimi Piee, Joseph Esso and Mio Tsuneyasu, but were unable to find a way past the disciplined home defence.

Imigresen nearly stunned the visitors when Wilmar Jordan Gil found the back of the net in the 38th minute. However, celebrations were cut short after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled the effort out for offside.

The hosts came close again after the break, with Fadzrul Danel Nizam testing Negeri Sembilan goalkeeper Muhammad Aqil Abd Razak in the 63rd minute. Aqil reacted superbly to push the low drive away and keep his side level.

Negeri Sembilan responded by raising the tempo in the final 20 minutes, introducing substitutes N. Javabilaarivin and Oday Kharoub in search of a breakthrough. Despite sustained pressure, the decisive goal remained elusive.

Imigresen also endured moments of misfortune, with Elvis Kamsoba seeing his boot come off during a goal attempt, while Eduardo Sosa was forced off after reportedly suffering a rib injury.

The scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman on 25 January.

Nidzam Jamil: Second-Half Improvement Clear, But Set-Piece Discipline Must Improve

Petaling Jaya, 14 January 2026 — Negeri Sembilan FC head coach Nidzam Jamil acknowledged a clear contrast between the two halves of his side’s performance following the 1–0 defeat to Selangor FC in the Malaysia Super League clash at Stadium MBPJ.

Speaking at the post-match press conference after LS16 of the Liga Super Malaysia 2025–26, Nidzam highlighted defensive issues in the first half—particularly in central areas and wide channels—that allowed Selangor to create problems through rotations and overloads.

“In the first half, defensively we couldn’t fully solve the problems they created, especially in midfield and the wide areas. When we pressed or shifted across, spaces opened up,” he explained.

However, the Negeri Sembilan coach praised his players for responding positively after the break, noting that the team managed those issues more effectively in the second half and showed better structure and control.

“In the second half, we managed the problems much better. You could see the improvement in how we dealt with their movement and pressure.”

Set-Piece Management a Deciding Factor

Despite the improved second-half showing, Nidzam was candid in admitting that set-piece defending proved costly, pointing to poor organisation and delivery as the key difference between the two sides.

“The difference came down to set pieces. We need to improve how we manage these situations. Conceding from set pieces is something we must address seriously.”

He also expressed concern over the number of corners conceded, stressing that allowing Selangor to win around 12 corners placed unnecessary pressure on his side.

Squad Challenges and Physical Demands

Nidzam also revealed that squad availability and physical fatigue played a role in shaping the match. Several key players were unavailable or only confirmed late, forcing last-minute adjustments to the lineup.

“We had issues with availability. Some players were not fit to play, and we only finalised certain replacements at the last moment. The previous match was very intense—many of our players covered over 11 to 12 kilometres—which made it difficult to maintain the same momentum.”

With another match coming up in just two to three days, the coaching staff attempted to inject fresh energy in the second half through substitutions, bringing on players such as Adeli and others in search of an equaliser.

Positive Intent, Fine Margins

Despite facing a strong opponent with greater resources, Nidzam was clear that Negeri Sembilan did not travel to Petaling Jaya merely to defend.

“We came here to play our normal game, not just to sit back. In the second half, we showed that intent and created a few chances, even if they weren’t many.”

He concluded by reiterating that while Selangor’s quality and investment were evident, the margins were fine—and discipline, particularly in dead-ball situations, must improve moving forward.

Narrow Defeat at MBPJ as Selangor FC Edge NSFC 1–0

Selangor FC climbed to second place in the Super League standings after securing a 1–0 victory over Negeri Sembilan FCin their clash at Stadium Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya earlier today.

The win marked another positive step for newly appointed head coach Kim Pan Gon, who has now recorded two wins from his first two matches in charge.

The result saw Selangor move up to 31 points, opening a two-point gap over third-placed KL City FC (29 points) and Kuching City FC (28 points), both of whom suffered defeats in their respective fixtures.

Selangor began the match aggressively, testing the NSFC defence as early as the second minute through a strike by Chrigor Moraes, which was well saved by NSFC goalkeeper Azri Ab Ghani.

The hosts continued to dominate possession, frequently attacking down the flanks and delivering crosses into the NSFC penalty area. Several promising moves created danger, but a lack of finishing quality and off-target attempts prevented Selangor from breaking the deadlock in the first half.

After the interval, Selangor maintained control, and the NSFC defence was finally breached in the 60th minute when Nooa Laine powered home a header to give the hosts a 1–0 lead.

NSFC came close to an equaliser in the 86th minute following a swift counter-attack that saw Anuar Ceesay unleash a shot that deflected off a Selangor defender. However, Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al-Hafiz Mat Rowi reacted quickly to gather the rebound.

Selangor had opportunities to extend their advantage late on, but Moraes missed from close range before Faisal Halimfired over the bar.

In the end, the solitary goal was enough to seal Selangor FC’s 10th league win of the season, while NSFC were left to reflect on a resilient but ultimately narrow defeat away from home.

Matchday with Meaning: Honouring Tuanku Muhriz on a Special Night at MBPJ

Nidzam Jamil: “We Must Learn to Close Games at This Level”

Head coach Nidzam Jamil admitted that fine margins and sustained concentration were the key differences following Negeri Sembilan FC’s narrow defeat to Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Liga Super 2025–26 clash at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman on 9 January.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Nidzam stressed that elite-level football demands unwavering focus from the first minute to the very last.

“At the top level, football requires full concentration from minute to minute. At the moment, that is the difference between us and JDT,” he said.

The Negeri Sembilan head coach acknowledged JDT’s maturity and ability to maintain intensity throughout the match, even deep into stoppage time.

“They have gone through this process before. Their development is very good. Even after 90 minutes, they are still able to keep the same intensity and take risks in attack.”

Focus, Not the Clock

Addressing questions over extended stoppage time and the late goal conceded, Nidzam was clear that the core issue was not the number of added minutes, but game management and focus.

“This is not about whether it was nine, ten or twelve minutes. The issue is focus. We cannot control the clock or the atmosphere. What we can control is how we play and how we close the game.”

He added that Negeri Sembilan had managed to stay competitive until the closing moments, but failed to kill the game when the opportunity arose.

“We controlled the match until the 96th or 97th minute. But in football, if you don’t manage the small details, you will be punished. Two or three minutes earlier, we could have slowed the game down and closed it better.”

A Valuable Lesson Against the Best

Despite the disappointment, Nidzam viewed the encounter as an important learning experience for his squad.

“This is the second time we’ve conceded very late, and that means we have to learn how to become ‘big men’ in this league. These are lessons you learn when facing teams like JDT.”

He also praised his players’ commitment and effort against an opponent with depth and quality across the pitch.

“In terms of commitment, I have no issue at all. The players worked hard. But JDT’s quality and the tempo they maintain for 90 minutes is what really tests us.”

Nidzam concluded by reiterating that growth at this level comes through experience, discipline, and the ability to manage crucial moments.

“This is football. These lessons will shape us moving forward.”

Late Heartbreak at Paroi as NSFC Fall Narrowly to JDT

Johor Darul Ta’zim further tightened their grip on the Super League summit after edging Negeri Sembilan FC 1–0 in a tense encounter at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Paroi earlier tonight.

Despite being put under sustained pressure, the Southern Tigers had to wait until the 97th minute to finally break the deadlock, following a disciplined and resolute display by the home side led by head coach Nidzam Jamil.

From the opening exchanges, JDT found it difficult to penetrate Negeri Sembilan’s well-organised defensive line, marshalled superbly by Harith Samsuri, Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee and newly signed Japanese centre-back Kei Oshiro.

The Hobin Jang Hobin side matched JDT’s quality with an aggressive and composed approach, creating their best opportunities through two set-pieces outside the penalty area in the 6th and 8th minutes. However, both attempts by Jovan Motika were comfortably dealt with by JDT goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi.

JDT gradually increased their attacking tempo, launching waves of attacks that forced Negeri Sembilan’s backline to remain on high alert—particularly against the threats posed by Bergson da Silva on the left flank and Oscar Arribas on the right.

In the 25th minute, Ager Barrutia tried his luck from approximately 25 metres out, but the effort went straight into the safe hands of Negeri Sembilan custodian Muhammad Azri Ghani.

Both teams continued to trade attacks and test the opposing goalkeepers, yet neither side managed to find the breakthrough, with the first half ending goalless.

After the restart, JDT intensified their pressure in search of the opening goal. In the 60th minute, Bergson’s close-range effort inside the penalty area lacked the power to trouble Azri, who remained solid between the posts.

The final 10 minutes proved especially demanding for Negeri Sembilan, as they were forced to absorb relentless pressure from JDT’s attacking unit.

Just as the match seemed destined to end in a hard-earned draw for the hosts, heartbreak struck deep into stoppage time. Substitute Federico Hidalgo rose highest to head home a cross in the 97th minute, sealing a late winner for JDT and bringing the contest to a dramatic conclusion.

Despite the narrow defeat, Negeri Sembilan FC’s spirited performance against the reigning champions showcased resilience, organisation and fighting spirit—qualities that will serve the team well in the challenges ahead.

Faliq Firdaus Explains NSFC’s Gradual Strategy for Paroi Improvements

Negeri Sembilan FC has reaffirmed its commitment to long-term, sustainable development both on and off the pitch, with Chief Executive Officer Faliq Firdaus providing further clarity on the club’s matchday vision and infrastructure planning at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Paroi.

Addressing supporters through a series of public responses, Faliq explained that while many initiatives are already mapped out, execution must take place gradually. As several of these ideas are still new within the Negeri Sembilan football environment, aligning all stakeholders towards a single direction requires time and careful coordination.

Focus on Stadium Infrastructure: LED and Electrical Systems

One of the immediate upgrades already completed is the installation of a new electrical distribution board (DB) at the stadium. With this foundational electrical work in place, the club’s next target is the phased installation of LED systems inside the stadium bowl, aimed at enhancing presentation, visibility, and the overall matchday atmosphere.

However, Faliq emphasised that all physical upgrades at Paroi remain subject to approval by Majlis Bandaraya Seremban (MBS), which oversees matters related to the stadium and its surrounding areas.

Matchday Activation: Towards #PestaBolaParoi

Beyond physical upgrades, the club is actively exploring ways to elevate the matchday experience into a more vibrant, community-driven occasion. Among the proposals under discussion is branding home matches as #PestaBolaParoi, a concept that could feature rented vendor lots, fan activities around the stadium precinct, and structured parking management.

The objective is to create a carnival-style environment that benefits supporters, local vendors, and small businesses, while also generating a sustainable return on investment. At present, the concept is still under review and has yet to receive final approval.

“There is no final decision yet, but efforts are ongoing,” Faliq noted.

Playing Surface and Long-Term Compliance

Responding to supporter concerns about the playing surface, Faliq confirmed that the Malaysia Football League (MFL)has issued a directive requiring all stadiums to move away from cowgrass by 2027. Negeri Sembilan FC is fully aware of this requirement.

As an immediate step, the club plans to install Zoysia grass at the NSFC Training Centre, before any transition is implemented at Stadium Paroi. According to Faliq, replacing the stadium pitch at this stage would require a full closure of the venue, raising complex questions about temporary home grounds, logistics, and cost.

Stadium Tampin as Contingency Planning

In terms of alternative venues, Stadium Tampin has been identified as the nearest facility that is close to meeting MFL specifications. The stadium has used Bermuda grass since the 2004 SUKMA Games and its playing surface is considered acceptable. However, several technical specifications are still incomplete, although improvements such as new dressing rooms were completed in 2025.

The club is currently working with relevant authorities to address outstanding requirements so that, when Paroi eventually undergoes pitch renovation, Negeri Sembilan FC will not need to relocate matches outside the state.

A Realistic, Step-by-Step Journey

Faliq concluded by stressing that all decisions are guided by realism and sustainability.

“We move gradually and prioritise what is closest to home, which is our training centre. We are not a wealthy club,” he explained, underlining the importance of measured progress rather than rushed solutions.

Through this phased approach, Negeri Sembilan FC continues to balance ambition with responsibility—laying the groundwork for a stronger matchday experience, compliant facilities, and long-term stability for The Jangs.
